A sanctuary of worship, learning & community
Rahma Islamic Centre, Winnipeg
On Wednesday evening, two individuals fired shots at our centre from a vehicle and then attacked the building with another weapon that broke glass, while community members were gathered inside. Thankfully, they were unable to enter the premises and no one was injured. Earlier that same day, individuals believed to be the same attackers shouted racial slurs at people gathered at the centre.
This has deeply shaken our volunteers, staff, children, and wider community. Our centre exists to be a place of worship, belonging, and peace — having that sense of safety violated is profoundly disturbing to all of us.
The incident has been reported to Winnipeg Police, who are actively investigating. We are also grateful for the outpouring of support from our neighbours, community members, and partners — including a public statement from Prime Minister Mark Carney condemning the attack as an act of Islamophobia with no place in Canada.
Rahma Islamic Centre remains committed to being a safe and welcoming space for everyone. We will share further information as the investigation progresses. If you have any information related to this incident, or any safety concerns, please reach out to us directly.
